Letter from the Superintendent - April 2015

Now that spring has arrived comes that last flurry of activity that makes the end of the school year rush by. It also, unfortunately, provides students the opportunity to “drop the ball” before they finish and miss out on some tremendous learning time. The NeSA testing window will be with us until May so our young people will be challenged to do their very best. These results are vital to where we go forward in planning for next year. Ask your student if they have prepared well for these tests. I’m quite sure that the material has been presented to them repeatedly and they have been assessed prior to the actual testing dates, so as a school we do have the opportunity to make improvements in our scores. Taking these assessments seriously is the first step and we need all parties involved to help out with this reinforcement.

There are very few days left for our senior class as they await graduation and what lies ahead for many of them. Whether it be college, the military, or a career – we wish them the best in their next adventure. Some look forward to getting out on their own and some not so much, but they all have their opportunity to show the world what they can do. As parents, we hope we have prepared them for their next stage in life. As for the junior class, finishing this year out strong is very important. The transcript at the end of the junior year will be the transcript you submit to most colleges for admission and scholarship selection. Grade point average, class rank, ACT scores, and course selection will all play a role as well as participation in extracurricular activities. Literally thousands of dollars may be on the line!

Summer school may be a very good choice for many students. If they have struggled during this school year academically or missed a great deal of school, it’s a good time to cover some ground that may have been missed during the regular school year. It can be a great chance for some one-on-one instruction and credit recovery for some students. Be sure to contact Mrs. Latta or Mr. Springer about the summer school opportunities at each site.

Sincerely,

R. Todd Porter - Superintendent
