Letter from the Superintendent - December 2015

December 2015

It is that time of the year that student health becomes a tremendous issue for schools and students. As viruses and other non-viral illnesses sweep through schools, it is very important for students and schools to follow some basic guidelines.

At the school level, our custodians do an extra level of cleaning surfaces and disinfecting as many areas that students or teachers may have contact with on a daily basis. The custodial staff thoroughly cleans our classrooms, restrooms, cafeteria, gymnasiums, locker rooms, etc., with great concern over the health of our students. We reinforce the concepts of sneezing or coughing away from other students, washing hands thoroughly or using hand sanitizer when it is not possible to wash with soap and water. Sickness seems to touch all of our households eventually, but we can reduce the odds of multiple illnesses if we work together.

It is of extreme importance that our children get plenty of rest and proper nutrition to help prevent illness, as well. Our bodies can fight off illnesses a lot more efficiently if they have the proper rest, fuel, and hydration.

Finally, if a physician prescribes medication for our children we need to be sure that they take the entire prescription at the proper dosage. At times since our child seems to get to feeling better we may not feel that continuing the medication is really necessary. There is a reason the dosage and frequency that has been prescribed, so we need to be sure that that nasty virus or ailment doesn’t come around for a second visit. Here’s to a healthy and happy December. Of course, always call the school and let us know if your child is ill and if they have visited the Dr.’s office get a note for your child’s file. That makes the illness just that more easy to document if absences become an issue later.

Sincerely,

R. Todd Porter
