Letter from the Superintendent - May 2022

May is upon us and we look forward to the summer break for renewal, time with family and friends, and the chance to prepare the school for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. Please note that we are still looking for kitchen help at the elementary school for next year as well as custodial positions district-wide. These positions can be full or part-time, come with great schedules for parents or grandparents, and include health and dental insurance if you work for at least 30 hours average per week. You would also be included in the Nebraska State Retirement system, so you could look forward to a pension. Please talk to an administrator if you are interested. We need good people to work with our children!

Graduation for this year’s seniors will be on Saturday, May 7th at 10:30 am in the high school gymnasium. We look forward to our usual large crowd and please remember we do not allow “Silly String” or like products. It is a gym floor killer, and we don’t need that kind of damage done to the floor. Graduation is a solemn occasion that we show our appreciation for these individuals who have put in the time and effort to reach this milestone. Great job, Seniors! Now on to the next phase of life.

Summer school will be held from 8:30am-11:30am Mondays-Thursdays on June 1st through the 28th. Students and their parents will be notified if it is recommended that they should be attending summer school to either make up credits or work on individual skills. It can be a great time for students to address learning issues, and there will be teachers working with students to help them along. They have to be in attendance, however, to benefit from this offering!

Due to food supply chain and staffing issues the free meal program that has been offered the past two summers will not be operating this summer. Even with the Federal reimbursement over these past couple of years, we still must supplement our Nutrition fund with money from the General fund to stay in the black. As we have already discussed, it appears unless some last-minute breakthrough in Congress happens, we will be returning to the regular format of full payment, free or reduced payment breakfast and lunches. It is vitally important that families fill out those free/reduced meal forms that we give all families. They not only help with the meal situation, but those percentages that we get from the forms shape how we qualify for Title I and Title II dollars, as well as REAP grants that help with technology purchases for our district. Simply stated, it helps us pay for needed tools for our school. Thanks for helping!

It has been an unusual school year, but we learned a great deal, faced the challenges and kept our school year as “normal” as possible. We have challenges ahead, but our staff will work hard to meet the needs of our students. Thanks to all in our community that have helped in the many ways that you do. We have many wonderful, supportive people that reach out to help and go above and beyond.
